How does Dutch National Ballet create a ballet? A new ballet production means new costumes, wigs, make-up, choreography, music, set and props. We produced three series which follow the making of Raymonda (2022), Frida (2020) and Mata Hari (2016). For the first time in the Netherlands, we are presenting our own production of Marius Petipa’s legendary ballet Raymonda. Associate artistic director Rachel Beaujean – assisted by a team that includes Ted Brandsen and Grigori Tchitcherine – is creating a completely new version of this masterpiece of the Russian ballet. And tells you all about in this new series of the making of Raymonda. In Becoming Frida presentor Milouska Meulens follows the entire creation of Frida. This ballet is inspired by the life of Frida Kahlo, a mexican artist, who fought many taboos in her time. She was crippled for the rest of her life after a tragic traffic accident. What is it like for principal ballerina Maia Makhateli to dance this part? You go behind the scenes and see rehearsals. And how did Annabelle Lopez Ochoa create this choreography with the help of designers and ateliers. Sylvana Simons presents Making of Mata Hari in which artistic director and choreographer Ted Brandsen shares how he created a ballet about the legendary Dutch dancer and spy Mata Hari.
