James Thomas was sentenced to life in prison at 17 years old for a crime his brother committed. The MacArthur Justice Center, alongside the Law Clinics at Washington University in St. Louis, advocated in front of the Missouri Parole Board for James' release. James was granted parole and in June 2023, he returned back to his family and community. The MacArthur Justice Center continues to advocate for #SecondChances, especially in juvenile cases like James’, where the capacity of rehabilitation is greatest. Founded in 1985, the Roderick & Solange MacArthur Justice Center is one of the premier civil rights law firms in the United States. In addition to Chicago, the MacArthur Justice Center has offices in New Orleans, LA; St. Louis, MO, Oxford, MS; and Washington, DC.
