Hear Shai Oster breaks down the evolution of venture capital and public listing in #China
"What is it going to be like for the venture capital in China? Is it going to be LPs within China? Or maybe, government capital going in the way they have been doing it in semiconductors at the moment. So let me get historical for a second. The fact that Silicon Valley VCs were able to have a field day in China is weird. Basically, from the government's perspective, the Internet wasn't technology. Alibaba's just people selling stuff, iQIYI is just people watching videos, right? From the government's perspective, technology was like rockets, cars, planes, semiconductors, you know, that stuff, right? Which was, many of these technologies, the ones where you couldn't invest. The other aspect is that if you were a tech company and it was going to grow fast but wasn't necessarily going to make a lot of money, you couldn't raise money domestically. The banks weren't going to lend to you. They didn't understand you. There was no domestic VC, barely a couple of nascent ones, but they function in a different world. They have a five-year horizon, not a 10-year. And then if you raise remnant B, because of the currency controls, you have to list within the country and then all the rules, the listing was a political consideration." - Shai Oster
