Sustainability at Durham University
We are committed to making Durham one of the most environmentally sustainable universities in the UK. Alongside major investments in out built environment and our teaching and research, we have introduced strong environmental policies and procedures. We are working to reduce our carbon emissions and to promote increased awareness of environmental issues. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and improving the local environment for our staff, students and wider community. Sustainability is at the heart of our University strategy. We are aiming for Net Zero carbon by 2035 – switching to renewable energy sources, minimising waste and promoting recycling, reuse and sustainable transport. We plan to achieve net biodiversity gain by 2032. Our work towards a sustainable future for all has been recognised in several sustainability league tables: 19th in the category of Sustainability (QS World University Rankings 2025) 19th in the QS World University Rankings for Sustainability 2024 15th for Sustainability (QS World University Rankings 2024: Europe) Top 40 in the People and Planet Green league Rankings 2022 / 23.
