I Am a Champ | The War Amps
The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program encourages Champs to accept their amputations and inspires them to be proud of being an amputee. Thanks to the public’s support of our Key Tag Service, we are able to fund the essential artificial limbs and devices that these child amputees need for everyday life. Learn more about The War Amps programs and services for amputees! https://waramps.ca/
In the Winner's Circle Profile Series, we are able to feature not only the very special programs that The War Amps is able to offer to amputees and all Canadians but also to feature some of the families who have benefited from these programs. Each profile tells a positive story of success and reflects the unique "Winner's Circle" philosophy which has been part of The War Amps from the beginning.

For more than 40 years, The War Amps and the Canadian Football League (CFL) have shared a special tradition – the filming of a public service announcement (PSA), saluting the League’s long-time support of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program. The tradition goes back to the days when the late Karl Hilzinger was The War Amps CHAMP Sports Consultant. “Karlo” was a CFL all-star who played for the Ottawa Rough Riders in the 1950s. A car accident left him a double-leg amputee. He became an inspiration to child amputees and was well-known as the silver-suited skier in The War Amps television messages. The War Amps and the CFL have been working together ever since. The PSA, which features a different team every year, airs during CFL game telecasts, including the Grey Cup.
